Sotomayor Enjoys Wide Support from Disability Groups

US-- Disability Scoop reports that more than 24 disability rights and advocacy groups such as the American Association of People with Disabilities, the Autism Society of America, the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, the National Council on Independent Living, and others have asked the US Senate to support Sonia Sotomayor’s Supreme Court appointment.

Sonia Sotomayor has adjudicated cases involving the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Social Security, and Medicaid while serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals. Robert Bernstein, executive director of the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, says “Judge Sotomayor has repeatedly demonstrated a thorough understanding and a deep respect for the laws that protect the rights of Americans with physical and mental disabilities…”

It is great to read something with good news after the state budget deficits. However, I already knew that someone was going to support her, and I am not surprised that they were disability groups.

Finally, Sotomayor is receiving the support and encouragement than criticism for trying to become a greater leader with diabetes. She has been a supporter and has adjudicated cases involving ADA, IDEA, Social Securit, and Medicaid. She understands the importance of advocating for individuals with disabilities and respects the laws that protects them. Way to go Sotomayor!!! : )

I think that Sotomayor has proven that she is qualified to do the job. As mentioned in the article that she has previous experience dealing with cases involving the ADA, IDEA, Social Security, and Medicaid. So her knowledge can only be beneficial and bring about some much needed change and advocacy. There is no wonder that there are 24 disability rights and advocacy groups showing their support for Sotomayor.

I think that Judge sotomayor has a good track record and will be a plus for backing up the legislation that has been passed in favor of people with disability. I do not agree with her 2005 comment than implicated or at least the way i interpreted that laws do get made through the bench. I believe her nomination is inevitable ,but i hope she uploads the law and not any other activist agenda.

I think it is great that all those groups are taking the time to write letters and push for Sotomayor's nomination. The only issue I have with this is that why is Sotomayor's nomination by Obama making so many headlines? Is it because she's a woman? Hispanic? I know others in her place probably pushed for help for people with disabilities as well but to have such support from all those organizations has to mean and say something about her capabilities. Why are so many people trying to push her down? Aissa S.

I've been watching clips of Sotomayor responding to questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee. She seems completely competent to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. All the disability advocacy groups are aware of this, so it's great to see them stand by her. Apparently she has made some decisions that shed a positive light on people with disabilities. She, herself, has diabetes, so she understands a bit about the plight that comes along with living with one. She will be a great asset to the Court and to the people of our nation.

Sonia Sotomayor will be a breath of fresh judicial air on the U.S. Supreme Court. I was actully disgusted by the hearings last week and how some of the Senators spoke down to her. I felt that it was both because she was a woman and a hispanic. In addition, we read weeks ago that many felt that because she was diabetic it might mean she can't do the job of a chief justice!! Come on! Though the job of a chief justice is based on the law, each is human and their personal experiences will provide insight that can at times be useful! I look forward t great things from her!

It is wonderful to hear the disability groups are in support of Sotomayor. Also backing her up are environmental and pro-abortion groups…even a few Republican Senators. Surprisingly, (at least to me) women’s groups have been very “quiet” in their support.

Now that the hearings are over and it’s time to vote, if all goes well, she is set sit on the bench by early September. Can't wait to see her there...

It is great and an honor to have an individual who strongly supports the rights of individuals with disabilities being nominated to the supreme court. We definitely need the support of someone as qualified and supportive, to advocate for individuals with disabilities. It is of great benefit that Sotomayor has adjudicated cases involving the ADA, IDEA, Social Security and Medicaid.

We need more representatives like Sotomayor, who represent people with disabilities possitivly. In order to protect their rights, people with disabilities, along with professionals in the area, need to promote people like Sotomayor who understands these disability rights. What we need is a modern day Justin Dart, with supreme judical powers!

I agree with most that Sotomayor deserves the support she is recieving from disability groups. I think she will be a great addition to the Supreme court. I think her support for people with disabilities and her experience as a person with a disability can be a great asset.

Its good to know that a fellow Hispanic women, who could potentially be a judge of the supreme court have a respect and understands PWD. I hope that she does get elected. If she does I forsee some possible changes in the future... not only for Hispanics but for PWD

I think that it is great that Sonia Sotomayor has adjudicated cases involving the ADA, IDEA, Social Security and Medicaid while serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals. She has shownn the upmost respect for the rights of all. It is sad that the media tries to intimidate when one gets appointed to office. They go after race, gender and anything that can find just to make their stories. I admire all that she has done. Rebecca Griffith

I think we need more leaders like Sotomayor who advocate for such groups. She deserves to be recognized and to be thanked for focusing on such an important issue when there are so many other leaders with their focus on insignificant issues.
