UK Disability & Beauty: Good TV?

15 July 2008
The Guardian (UNITED KINGDOM) — Popular British TV show, “Britain’s Missing Top Model” (http://www.bbc.co.uk/missingmodel/) is a UK reality program searching for a top model with a disability. But can TV effectively debate society's attitudes to beauty and disability, or is it just exploitive? As with most reality TV, the contestants cry, fight, and bare their souls, while snarky judges ponder their merits. But in this show, the debate includes whether a deaf contestant has as much right to participate as a contestant with paraplegia.

I personally think this is a great opportunity for women with disabilities to fulfill their dreams. I also think it going to inspire many persons with disabilities who watch nationwide.

I think this tv show would be a great way to let people with disabilities, be able to show that they are not just a person with a disablity but with talents, beauty and a person like eveyone else.I also think a deaf person should have the same right to participate in the contest as a person with paraplegia. Well in my point of view, there are many questionable issues that may arise with this topic. Many people including myself believe that this is a good idea and well organized. Everyone should have the same opportunities in any contest and they should be main stream and not have a contest by itself, why should if be different on one individual just because of his/her abilities. But in the question that was asked yes both individual with the disabilities (Deaf / Paraplegia)should have the same opportunities to participate in the same contest.

i think it really doesnt matter what disability it is, if the people running this reality show are willing to help the women with disabilities they should be be aware that there is alot of different disablities to adjust to.
